For years, people have been asking Ezekiel "Zeke" Emanuel, the brash, outspoken, and fiercely loyal eldest brother in the Emanuel clan, the same question What did your mom put in the cereal? Middle brother Rahm is the mayor of Chicago, erstwhile White House chief of staff, and one of the most colorful figures in American politics. Youngest brother Ari is a Hollywood super-agent, the real-life model for the character of Ari Gold on the hit series Entourage. And Zeke himself, whom the other brothers consider to be the smartest of them all, is one of the world's leading bioethicists and oncologists, and a former special advisor for health policy in the Obama administration. How did one family of modest means produce three such high-achieving kids? Here, for the first time, Zke provides the answer.

Set amid the tumult of Chicago in the 1960s and 1970s, Brothers Emanuel recounts the intertwined histories of these three rambunctious, hypercompetitive Jewish American boys, each with his own unique and compelling life story. But ultimately, this is the story of the entire Emanuel family the tough, colorful Old World grandparents; a mischievous, loving father who immigrated to the United States with twenty-five dollars and who enthralled his boys with tales of his adventures in Israel's war for independence; and a proud, politically engaged mother who took the boys with her to rallies and protests - including a civil rights march through the streets of Chicago led by Martin Luther King himself.

Even as the Emanuels distinguished themselves as individuals, the bond of brotherhood that tied them together was never broken. Brothers Emanuel is a wry, rollicking, and often poignant narrative of how one American family succeeded in raising three extraordinary children.

Brothers Emanuel A Memoir of an American Family (Audible Audio Edition) Ezekiel J Emanuel Random House Audio Books

Yes, it's titled Brothers Emanuel but leaving out the sister opens up questions that could, unfortunately, invade the privacy of all the siblings. Ezekiel did not focus only on men, his mother was/is a driving force . She was defiant and ahead of her time, protesting for civil rights but returning home to cook dinner for her husband. The Brothers have over achieving parents with definitive ideas and aggression. Competition was rampant but the parents presented strong examples of ethical and take-no-prisoners behavior. The paternal grandmother fascinated me; she was quiet, somewhat angry and lacked the vigor of her son and his family.

The love in the family flows through the memoir in tumultuous lifestyles. I felt that the family was in perpetual motion and they all took advantage of their intelligence and support . The book moved as fast as their aspirations, loaded with anecdotes and some new information. Purposely leaving out the sister, Shoshanna, apparenlty is a family decision in all aspects of their lives.

Brothers Emanuel A Memoir of an American Family (Audible Audio Edition) Ezekiel J Emanuel Random House Audio Books Reviews

Great study of the Chicago, America that Rham Emmanuel grew up in. Hyper-competitive family of brothers
Interesting read. My reason for choosing to read this book was curiosity as to factors which contributed to this family's producing three outstanding specialists in diverse and difficult professions. The big surprise was that these brothers were not the product of a conventional stable unit which offered clear guidelines for living well. Rather, the Emanuels thrived on the differences and differing approaches which were integral to their upbringing. They all managed to integrate the best of their experiences (and occasional exposure to very non-traditional lessons) into their lives in productive ways.
This book could have used a really good editing! It was also badly organized so I felt like I was on a roller coaster, going back and forth in time reading it. It is told by the oldest brother Dr. Zeke Emanuel, and he is not shy about tooting his own horn. I also don't like the way he talks abut his mother in this book, I found it to be very patronizing disrespectful.
I would have liked viewpoints from all three brothers much better.
There are highly intelligent, but neurotic parents, who were so different from one another, just as the three youngsters turned out to be.. One brother tells the story of their upbringing with intelligence, and frankness, and the book is easy to read, The book brings back a past that is now gone, but there are lessons to be learned in our digital age from three boys leaving a foot path as they developed into adulthood. I recommend the book highly. there is comedy and tragedy, but it shows how young people can reach for the top ,with perseverance, and a little bit of luck.
These men are so dynamic that one less than 300 page book does not do them justice. Once they leave puberty, they all seem to turn into one person or at least in my mind they do. I think one brother at a time could be profiled and have 3 spell-binding books. binding Also, the women fade into the background here but I know that over and above the Mother, other girls and women have had impacts on them that helped them steer their way. I hope that in the future, One of them write about himself and his life, friends, his career, sister, Mother, Father, colleagues etc. and brothers and how they impacted him.
I thought that this was an important story beautifully told. Although I grew up in Chicago during that same time frame with a father who was a physician, Ezekiel is even handed in his description of his entire family even though his father had some glaring flaws. One point that has stuck with me after reading the last page was that these kids knew that they were loved. Not only was this a story about a family but it really captured their jewish culture and the history of Chicago and the world from the 1950's through their adult years.
It would have been more complete to know about his parents after the three boys are adults. I also wonder what course his marriage took.
This is such a great read for us baby boomers.
An affectionate recounting of the raising of three
talented and enormously rambunctious boys
in a socially and financially upwardly mobile
Jewish family that seems clueless about instilling
basic manners in their lives together and with
others. The three sons became highly successful,
but one wonders if their own families live in the
mayhem they grew up in. It is sort of "family
member as assault projectile."

It is a sometimes painful recounting
of the oppression the talented mother
experiences with a dominating husband. The
family reminds one of the short stories of Tolstoy
and the peasant manners he recounts. The
parents, any more than the boys, do not seem to
understand the need for basic civility and boundaries.

While the family seem to manage in this situation,
it is often painful for friends and those they hope to
marry. While interesting to read about and written
in a very lively style, I would not have wanted to be
included in these people's lives. It would have been
punishing.

Interesting too is the writer's explanation of "secular
Jews" whose tie is to "the clan," but do not believe
in God, the chooser of the "Chosen People."

Much emphasis on the childhood, not so much on their
adult lives.
